Life With Junie: December 2018

The Ahlfs had an unexpected event interfere with our holiday weekend, but we still made happy memories. Well, some of them were happy. Justin's experience was far different from mine, as you will read shortly.

Thursday night was June's first holiday concert at her preschool. Each class sang 3 songs and then the big group sang two more. It was fun listening to June rehearse her songs at home during the month before the performance, and she did a great job at the concert! It was so neat to watch her up on stage at the high school she will attend in 11 years.

After we got home Thursday night Justin got sick. We're assuming it was food poisoning based on a number of factors, and it hit him really hard, landing him in the ER overnight. I took June to school Friday morning as usual and I went to pick Justin up from the ER. We had a long weekend trying to get him feeling better and thought he might have to go back to the hospital on Christmas Eve, but he didn't have to.

Since Justin wasn't feeling well and was resting, I spent the weekend taking care of him to the extent I could and entertaining June the rest of the time. Some of our activities included outings to the store, lunch with my mom for her birthday, a trip to the mall play area to run off some energy, and our big family gathering at my parents house on Christmas Eve. It was a bummer Justin couldn't join us and I was sad about the timing of his illness, but what can you do?

Our Christmas Eve gathering at my parents house was really nice. The cousins got to play together, there was lots of laughter and good food. It was the first time in many years that all of my siblings were together for the holiday, and I was thankful for the time together.

Christmas day was spent at home. June woke us up at 5:40 a.m. (normal for her) and we all got up together and she got to see her present from Santa before we had her eat breakfast and let us wake up a bit before doing the rest of the presents. She's really into Paw Patrol right now and got several Paw Patrol toys, which she loved. Justin was feeling well enough to play with June a few times during the day and in the afternoon I took June and Rosco for a walk. June's quite the pro on her trike now!

While the time off didn't go as planned, I'm very thankful for a tolerant child who goes with the flow, for Justin being on the mend now, and for the time spent with family. We're very fortunate to have each other.
